Halifax Calling is reminiscent of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables both in timeline and historic elements. Maud is equally bright—a young woman who wants to start her own business. But she becomes a victim of vicious gossip, and employment proves difficult to find and maintain in the tiny community of East Cove.
Mossman’s story is a stark reminder of what women had to endure; in a time when we were not regarded as equal, reputations could be
damaged simply by rumour, and obtaining a loan was next to impossible for a woman.
